November 2023

Lake Havasu City gears up for a deliciously spirited competition as Mohave Community College (MCC) hosts its first-ever Bighorn Chili Cook-Off. Slated for November 4th at the scenic Havasu Riviera Marina, this culinary challenge is more than just a battle for the best bowl of chili; it’s a community effort to support the inaugural men’s and women’s soccer teams at MCC.
Tina Stocking, the dynamic owner of Arizona Marketing Solutions and a key organizer, has been instrumental in coordinating the event alongside MCC Booster Club board members. This gastronomic gathering aims to provide financial support for the college’s athletic programs, allowing the teams to travel and compete, and potentially expand to include sports like golf and basketball.
The Cook-Off will showcase over two dozen chefs, with a significant number traveling from outside Arizona, all competing in categories like homestyle, traditional red, and chili verde, alongside a ‘people’s choice’ award. Expert international judges and local luminaries will be on hand to crown the champions, who could go on to compete in the International Chili Society’s 2024 World Championship Chili Cook-off.
With a tantalizing $1,000 prize for first place winners and additional cash awards for runners-up, the stakes are as high as the excitement. Event attendees can look forward to a vibrant atmosphere filled with live music from Matt Farris and Crosscutt Music, a beer garden, fun corn hole games, an array of vendors, and a dedicated kids zone.
Tickets to the event are $25, which includes chili tastings and entry into a prized raffle. All proceeds are earmarked for MCC’s soccer teams, set to kick off their season in August 2024.
The community’s anticipation is palpable, with Stocking remarking on the broader impact of the event: “It’s a milestone for the tri-state area, invigorating local spirit and promising to boost the economy through sports tourism.”
For those interested in participating or attending, the MCC Bighorn Chili Cook-Off will be a flavorful and festive way to contribute to a local cause. The event promises to be a testament to Lake Havasu City’s community spirit and a celebration of local culinary talent.

Proposed bill would consolidate control of Mohave County public schools

A controversial bill proposed by two Mohave County legislators would implement a pilot program consolidating control of the county’s public school districts under a single elected official.
House Bill 2717, sponsored by State Reps. John Gillette (R-Kingman) and Leo Biasiucci (R-Lake Havasu City), would transfer many powers held by local school boards to the Mohave County School Superintendent’s office for a 5-year pilot program starting in 2025. The bill would also implement a similar consolidated administration pilot program in neighboring La Paz County.
