October 2022

BULLHEAD CITY, AZ – Mohave Electric Cooperative (MEC) is proud to announce its continuing sponsorship of the annual one-week Washington Youth Tour.
This year marks the return of the trip to the nation’s capitol since the COVID-19 pandemic led to a statewide cancellation for the 2020 and 2021 Youth Tours. Applications will be accepted for the 2023 Washington Youth Tour as the trip is expected to take place. For 2023, applications should include a 300–500 word essay and are due no later than 5 p.m. on Oct. 15, 2022. The application can be found at https://www.mohaveelectric.com/community/washington-youth-tour/ or by speaking with local high school counselors.
MEC selects participants from applicants through a competitive two-step process. The top scorers from the initial essay will advance to the presentation before a panel of judges. All applicants must be high school juniors and receive parental or guardian permission to apply. Students whose parents, or guardians, are MEC members, will be selected to represent Mohave Electric Cooperative in the annual Washington Youth Tour. The weeklong excursion allows the students to interact with others from all over the country, visit the Capitol’s landmarks, and learn about our country’s rich history. The annual Youth Tour takes place in Summer 2023 in Washington, D.C.
“The Washington Youth Tour is a unique opportunity to inspire students for success, and here at Mohave Electric Cooperative, we believe in providing the tools and resources, when we can, to help,” stated MEC’s CEO Tyler Carlson. “Education, Training, and Information” is one of the seven Cooperative principles upheld by MEC. The Washington Youth Tour is one way MEC shows commitment to this principle, and our community, is by supporting the future of even the youngest of members,” Carlson said.
Founded in 1946, Mohave Electric Cooperative is a not-for-profit utility providing reliable, cost-effective power to 36,700 members, 43,500 meters, with more than 1,555 miles of line spanning areas from Bullhead City to Topock on the west, Hualapai to Burro Creek to the south, and Nelson to the east. MEC is an equal opportunity provider and employer.

Arizona AG joins FTC and coalition of states to challenge merger of Kroger & Albertsons supermarkets

Attorney General Kris Mayes, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and a bipartisan coalition of states, today announced the filing of a lawsuit that challenges the proposed merger of Kroger and Albertsons. These companies are the country’s two largest national supermarket chains, and this merger presents a significant risk of reduced competition and higher food prices nationwide. In Arizona, the two chains are the fourth and sixth largest employers, with a combined 35,000 employees across 250 stores. The companies also operate under Fry’s, Smith’s, and Safeway brands in Arizona.
