Mohave Community College (MCC) has rolled out an innovative Workforce in Excellence series at their campuses, including the one in Lake Havasu City, with the mission to enhance the skill sets of employees from local businesses. The demand for the program, as noted in an MCC announcement, has been robust
The initiative emphasizes the cultivation of soft skills, such as customer service, conflict resolution, and effective communication. MCC’s approach included conducting focus groups in partnership with local
Chambers of Commerce and economic development entities to tailor the program to the specific needs of various industries. Mary Mendola, the former director of corporate education at MCC, highlighted that a consistent need for soft skills was voiced across sectors ranging from manufacturing to hospitality.
Building on this insight, MCC designed a curriculum that offers customized skill sets, adapting to the unique requirements of individual businesses, explained by Sandy Desmarteau, who manages the Corporate and Community Education Program at MCC. This led to the creation of the Lake Havasu City Supervisor Excellence Academy.
The city of Lake Havasu City is one of the first to benefit from this series. A specialized program was created in collaboration with MCC to empower current and prospective city supervisors, aiming to advance their professional capabilities.
Lake Havasu City Mayor Cal Sheehy, an MCC alumnus, expressed his commitment to this program, emphasizing its role in equipping the workforce for future opportunities. The academy started in June and will extend until February, with weekly classes culminating in proposals from participants to improve city operations, reflecting their learning experience.
The series isn’t limited to custom programs for businesses; individuals looking to enhance their job security, seek promotions, or change careers can also participate. MCC, in conjunction with ARIZONA@WORK and local Chambers of Commerce, offers financial support for those in need.
Currently, MCC seeks instructors for various subjects within the series, including management, leadership, and customer service. Interested individuals are encouraged to contact Wendy Reisinger, the associate dean of corporate education at MCC.
