MOHAVE COUNTY — Most students can’t wait for summer to get a break from school, but Rowan Gerdes, a registered nursing student, had other plans.
Gerdes volunteered to help nursing faculty with the nursing assistant students. After going through the semester, receiving help from his instructors, Gerdes felt the need to repay them for all the hours they spent together making sure he knew the learning material.
“The only way I could think of paying my instructors back for all the time they spent with me was by volunteering my time this summer to help them with the summer Nursing Assistant program,” said Gerdes.
During the summer, he was able to help nursing assisting students make sure they were able to learn all of the fundamental nursing skills that will help them with taking their national board exams, and move on to the more advanced nursing programs.
Gerdes said it was rewarding to see students in the nursing program grow and develop their nursing skills, and he hopes to one day work alongside them.
He decided to attend MCC because he wanted to make a future for himself, and always wanted to become a nurse. As a nursing student, Gerdes has enjoyed the program because he has been exposed to new experiences and new people who have become good friends.
“MCC has helped me grow in ways I never thought possible. I attribute it to all the wonderful professors I have had in the Nursing Program. They challenge me every single day in class. I will always be thankful and am looking forward to the next year,” Gerdes said.
After MCC, he plans to continue his education to achieve his ultimate goal of becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. Gerdes currently works at Kingman Regional Medical Center as a Patient Care Technician. When he’s not studying, Gerdes enjoys spending time playing PC games and riding motorcycles.
