MOHAVE COUNTY – The U.S. Department of Education just notified Mohave Community College (MCC) that the college will receive a prestigious grant totaling nearly $3 million.
The federal grant will support MCC’s Pathways to Success for Hispanic and Low-Income Students project. As a designated Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), MCC is committed to empowering students from diverse backgrounds, and this grant will bolster those efforts.
Pathways to Success Initiative
The Pathways to Success for Hispanic and Low-Income Students initiative is designed to enhance academic success, graduation rates and career readiness for Hispanic and low-income students.
“This grant will have a transformative impact on our students, especially those who need the most support,” said MCC President Dr. Stacy Klippenstein. “It’s about creating lasting systemic changes that will benefit our students and our community for years to come.”
Key Focus Areas
The College Pathways to Success project focuses on expanding key areas to ensure student success. These areas include:
- Supporting Pathway Selection
- Enhancing College Readiness
- Boosting Success in Challenging Courses
- Improving Persistence and Graduation Rates
Under the plan, the MCC will expand personalized guidance that helps students choose their academic and career paths, reducing the time it takes them to earn a degree or certificate. The College will also create more programs to help prepare students for college-level coursework. There will be a special focus placed on improving academic performance through support mechanisms, such as tutoring and coaching.
Grant Impact and Recognition
“MCC is deeply honored to receive this prestigious grant from the U.S. Department of Education,” said MCC Executive Vice President Tim Culver. “It’s a tremendous opportunity to expand our efforts to ensure Hispanic and low-income students have the support they need to succeed.”
The project is based on the Guided Pathways Framework developed by the Community College Research Center (CCRC), which emphasizes the importance of creating clear, structured pathways for students.
Improving Student Success
MCC is making it easier for students to succeed by creating clear academic program maps that guide students toward their career and educational goals. The college has also improved its student onboarding process and is further enhancing it so every student has a personalized plan for their education and career.
Serving Mohave County’s Diverse Population
The grant comes at a time when MCC is expanding its commitment to serving the diverse population of Mohave County which, geographically, is the fifth largest county in the United States. The College mission of empowering students to succeed through innovative pathways aligns perfectly with the grant objectives, particularly in fostering inclusive support services for Hispanic and low-income students.
