Life is stressful! Many people worry about what is going to happen with the economy, with jobs, not to mention daily cares of life.
During these times we may give into high calorie/high fat foods with the misconception that food is a reward for a hard day. Or, that it will help us deal with the stress that we are experiencing. During times of stress, it’s important to avoid high fat foods to continue to lose weight or to maintain our current weight. Research shows that stress can make it difficult to burn fat and promotes the storage of fat. Researchers at Ohio State University show that high fat foods are more damaging when the body is under stress. Stress slows down the metabolizing of fat and increases triglyceride levels. The body responds by releasing hormones that trigger appetite, cause fatigue, depression, and stores fat in our gut.
Stress spells trouble for anyone trying to lose weight, therefore, managing stress can have a significant impact on our weight. The best ways to manage stress include participating in daily exercise, and getting involved in activities that make us laugh or relax.
Exercise helps us to stick to good eating habits. We’ll be less apt to overeat or cheat because we won’t want to negate all the good work we’ve done. Regular exercise helps control blood sugar, increase metabolism, burn more calories, decrease cholesterol, decrease the incidence and symptoms of depression, improve PMS symptoms, and decrease pain from arthritis. We’ll have more energy and greater self-confidence. What’s more motivating than that? Thinking about how sluggish overeating or eating high fat, sweet treats can make us will help us say no.
Research shows that people who exercise at least 3 hours a week eat a more balanced diet. So why are so many people sedentary? Part of the problem is that most people perceive exercise as hard work. Physical activity can be quite enjoyable, especially when we start seeing health benefits.
Think about how much you move during the day. Do you sit or walk around? Do you find yourself on the go doing errands and chores? Or, do you find yourself taking the most convenient measure to complete your errands? Do you drive around looking for the closest parking spot, or park farther and walk? Do you participate in sports, garden, or do house chores with free time?
Think about how fun it could be to play tennis, walk in a park, go bowling, swim, or participate in another physical activity. Think about how easy it would be to start parking in the first available space. Think about how many calories you burn cleaning the house. Think about how enjoyable exercise can be. Keep in mind how it can benefit your weight loss and health.
