KINGMAN — Many people are confused about what accurate serving sizes are when it comes to good nutrition and a healthy diet.
The Confusion Around Serving Sizes
In fact, a survey by the American Dietetic Association shows that many people need help determining recommended serving sizes. The survey found that most consumers overestimate the serving size of:
- Cooked vegetables (1/2 cup)
- Cooked pasta (1/2 cup)
- Cooked rice (1/3 cup)
- Cooked lean meat, poultry or fish (Generally 1 ounce equals 1 serving)
A Diet Center weight loss program will teach you how many servings should be consumed each day.
Underestimating Portion Sizes
People also underestimated portion sizes. Eighty-one percent of the respondents underestimated the serving size of cheese.
The Impact of Restaurant Portions
With many restaurant items and convenience foods available in super sizes, it’s not surprising to find overestimated serving sizes consumed at home. When asked to compare serving sizes of restaurant food to serving sizes prepared at home:
- Less than half (44%) of respondents said that they think restaurants serve larger portions than their meals at home.
- Thirty percent of respondents said that restaurant meals are smaller than the meals they prepare at home.
- Twenty-five percent said that their meals at restaurants are the same size as what they make at home.
