TRISTATE – The Inaugural Monarch Triathlon SuperHalf™ is scheduled in Bullhead City and Kingman on Oct. 22. Up to 1,100 all-female participants will cover a total of 56 miles. Athletes will begin at 7 a.m. with a nine-tenths mile swim in the Colorado River, then cycle 48 miles on Historic Highways 68 and 66, before running seven miles along famous Route 66 with a finish line under the Kingman Welcome Arch.
The Monarch Triathlon, hosted by SheStrong, an Arizona 501(c)3 registered triathlon team with USA Triathlon, is one of only eight all-women triathlons in the United States. “Our teams represent the strength and resiliency of female cancer patients,” said SheStrong founder and event coordinator Brandy Ramirez. A portion of the event proceeds will be donated to provide college scholarships to young women who have lost their mother to cancer so that these ladies are able to grow and transform, like the Monarch butterfly, and celebrate their life despite the setbacks and hardships faced when losing a parent.
The finish line will mark a celebration of life for the participants and their families. Prior to the event, athletes can record a personal message, which could be a tribute to their battle with cancer or a loved one lost to cancer. The event will come to life as each athlete reaches the finish line and their messages are played on a message board for everyone to hear why they participated in the Monarch Triathlon. “I would make a tribute to myself. I battled stage-3 cancer from 2017-2019. I also lost my mother to cancer in 2021, so I would dedicate my race in her honor” said Ramirez.
An awards ceremony will be held at 5:30 in the Lee Williams football field, recognizing the top three athletes in each age group.
